In Colombo, Sri Lanka, the executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), has been summoned to appear before the Court of Appeal on March 15, 2021. This summons is in response to a writ petition filed by civil activists and former cricketers, who are calling for a new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket before the next SLC election. The petition was considered today by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Arjuna Obeysekara, and Justice Mayadunne Corea.
The petition, filed by a group of 12 individuals including former cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, Sidath Wettimuny, retired Judge Saleem Marsoof, Dr. Palitha Kohona, Ryenzie Wijethilaka, and Kushil Gunasekara, argues that the current cricket administration in the country is heavily influenced by political and other external factors. The petitioners are urging for changes to be made before the forthcoming SLC election, to mitigate these influences.
They are seeking the Court of Appeal’s intervention to direct the respondents to take necessary steps in this matter. The respondents in this case include the Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa, Chairman of SLC Shammi Silva, Deputy Chairman Ravin Wickramaratne, Jayantha Dharmadasa, Thilak Wattuhewa, and Secretary Mohan De Silva.
Mr. Sanjeeva Jayawardene PC with Dr. Milhan Mohomad appeared for the Petitioners, instructed by Sudath Perera Associates.
